Research Chemist

Purpose of the role

To perform process development work concerned with improving the efficiency of site operations. Carries out special development projects as assigned. Carries out tests and analyses for control of production operations and monitors performance of process operations.

Major Accountabilities

Process Development Service

Plans and performs laboratory, pilot and plant scale experimental work to resolve refining problems, optimise operating conditions and develop improvements in refining processes.
Keeps adequate records of experimental work, interprets and reports results, and assists in the implementation of accepted recommendations.
Monitors and reports on the performance of process operations and liaises with production staff to identify and implement appropriate programmes of development work. Alerts Manager - Process Technology to adverse trends in production operations.
Maintains up to date knowledge of advances in technology.
Provides cover for the Process Control Laboratory as required by the Co-ordinator Process Control.


Special Projects

Carries out special development projects as assigned by the Manager Process Development & Control
Takes the lead role in the management of such programmes including liaison with Process Department through to project completion

Process Control Laboratory Service

Perform prescribed tests as required to provide control information for the Production Department and to monitor the liquid effluents and gaseous emissions from the site.
Alert Process Section Leaders and Team Chemists to adverse trends in production operations.
Perform additional testing to enable unusual and experimental operations to be monitored and samples and carries out tests as required to monitor the quality of the process reagents.
Carries out such tests as required to comply with confined entry permit procedure

The role holder is accountable to take all necessary actions to ensure compliance with statutory requirements, legislated regulations, policies, work standards, and governance requirements in his/her area of accountability.
Ensure adherence to safe working practices and approved standards and maintain high standards of operational cleanliness and environmental control
Ensure that all equipment and facilities used are in safe condition.
Report all safety issues, problems and incidents.

Team / Continuous Development

Create, maintain and enhance effective working relationships within the Section and across all Departments.
Provides guidance for Development Chemists 360 support for colleagues in the Technical Department.
Attends courses and meetings associated with job requirements.

Security
Ensures the security of materials within the area of responsibility.

Relevant Qualifications/Experience

Ideally a PHD or a minimum of a degree in Chemistry or a related subject
Have gained experience in the laboratory
Be computer literate and able to use Microsoft packages
